The Health Test Your Pediatrician Isn't Running (But Should Be)

We hear this almost every single week from moms in our office. “We’ve been to every specialist. We’ve done all the testing. But no one can tell us why my child is struggling.”

If that feels familiar, please know this right away. You are not alone in this.

You have done everything you were told to do. You have shown up to the appointments, asked the questions, followed through with recommendations, and advocated for your child every step of the way. And yet, you are still left without real answers.

Your child is still dealing with ear infections that keep coming back, delays in speech or development, sensory struggles that make everyday moments overwhelming, or sleep that just never seems to settle. Maybe focus is a challenge, or big emotions feel constant and unpredictable.

You have likely gone through the full round of testing. Blood work, imaging, maybe even more advanced neurological tests. And each time, you hear the same thing. Everything looks normal.

But deep down, you know your child is not functioning the way they should be.

So what is being missed?

The Critical Gap in Traditional Pediatric Care

Traditional pediatric care is incredibly valuable when it comes to identifying serious illness or disease. It is designed to answer an important question, which is whether something is medically wrong or structurally damaged.

But there is another question that often goes completely unasked. How well is your child’s nervous system actually functioning?

This is the system that controls everything. It is responsible for how your child digests food, fights off illness, sleeps, regulates emotions, processes sensory input, focuses, and develops.

It is the system that coordinates the entire body.

And yet, it is rarely ever measured.

At every wellness visit, your child’s height and weight are carefully tracked and compared over time. But the system that drives growth, development, and regulation is often left completely unassessed.

That gap is where so many families fall through.

Why "Normal" Test Results Don't Tell the Whole Story

It can feel incredibly confusing to be told that everything is normal when your daily life tells a very different story.

The truth is, most traditional tests are looking for clear signs of disease or damage. They are not designed to evaluate how well the body is functioning on a day to day basis.

Here's a sobering statistic: nearly 1 in 12 children in the U.S. Many children with challenges like speech delays, sensory processing difficulties, chronic health issues, or behavioral struggles will still have completely normal test results.

That does not mean nothing is wrong. It simply means nothing has been identified within the scope of what those tests are designed to detect.

A helpful way to think about it is this. A car can technically run without being in good condition. It can start, move, and get from one place to another, but still struggle with performance, efficiency, and reliability.

The same can be true for your child’s nervous system.

Understanding INSiGHT Scans: Three Windows Into Your Child's Nervous System

INSiGHT scans give us a way to look at how your child’s nervous system is functioning in real time.

The NeuroThermal scan helps us understand how stress is affecting digestion, immune function, and overall organ regulation. This is often where we begin to connect the dots for things like reflux, constipation, or frequent illness.

The EMG scan looks at tension and stress patterns within the nervous system. This helps explain challenges related to development, coordination, and sensory processing.

The HRV scan shows how well your child’s body is able to adapt to stress. This is especially important for children who struggle with sleep, emotional regulation, or transitions throughout the day.

When these scans are combined, they provide a much more complete picture of what is happening beneath the surface.

The Patterns That Explain Everything: Raging Bull and Drunken Bull

One of the most helpful parts of these scans is that they often reveal patterns that finally make things make sense for parents.

Some children show signs of being stuck in a constant state of stress. Their bodies are always on, making it difficult to relax, sleep, or regulate emotions. This is referred to as the "Raging Bull" Pattern.

Other children show patterns of disorganization within the nervous system. These kids may struggle with coordination, focus, sensory input, or keeping up developmentally. This si referred to as the "Drunken Bull" Pattern.

Many children fall somewhere in between, which is why their symptoms can feel so varied and hard to connect.

The Perfect Storm: Why This Happens

These patterns usually do not happen overnight. They build over time through layers of stress on the nervous system.

This can begin during pregnancy with physical or emotional stress. It can continue through the birth process, even when a birth is considered normal. Early illnesses, medications, and environmental stressors can all add to the load.

Over time, the nervous system can become overwhelmed and stuck in a state that it was never meant to stay in long term.

We often refer to this as the “The Perfect Storm"!

Why Your Child's Therapies Might Not Be Working

If you have already started therapies and feel like progress is slower than expected, there is often a reason for that.

Therapies like speech or occupational therapy are incredibly valuable. They provide important tools and support for your child’s development.

But if the nervous system is overwhelmed or not functioning well, it can be much harder for your child to fully receive and integrate that input. This is called dysautonomia!

When the foundation is supported first, everything else has a better chance to build on it.

From Guessing to Knowing: The Power of Objective Data

One of the most empowering parts of this approach is that it replaces uncertainty with clarity.

Instead of trying different things and hoping something works, you are able to see what is actually happening within your child’s nervous system.

Progress can be tracked, changes can be measured, and care can be tailored specifically to what your child needs.

Your Child Isn't "Broken" They're Stuck!

This is so important to understand.

Your child is not broken, and they are not beyond help.

In many cases, their nervous system has simply been overwhelmed and has not yet found its way back to balance.

When given the right support, the body has an incredible ability to heal, regulate, and grow.

You Deserve More Than "Wait and See"

If you have been told to wait and see, or that your child will grow out of it, it is okay to want more than that.

It is okay to keep searching for answers and to trust what you are seeing as a parent.

You and your child deserve clarity, direction, and support.
